ESN is Smart Nitrogen for Pre-Plant or Side-Dress Applications on Corn

Source: Dr. K.Nelson, Univ of Missouri. Study was conducted at Novelty, MO 2007-2010. All treatments applied at 150 lbs N/acre. Dry fertilizers were broadcast with no incorporation; UAN applied as dribble band in alternate mid-rows. Side-dress applications were applied at about V6 growth stage. AT = Agrotain. The following assumptions were used for profit calculations: corn price = $3.50/bu; ESN price difference vs urea = $0.20/lb N and vs UAN = $0.15/lb N.

ESN is the ideal N source to protect against all loss mechanisms regardless of application timing and is particularly effective in high loss environments where stabilizers and other additives provide insufficient protection. ESN is especially effective in top-dress applications in providing extended feeding for the late-season needs of modern corn hybrids.

A four-year Missouri corn study demonstrates the advantage of protecting your nitrogen with ESN in both pre-plant and top- or side-dress applications.

  • ESN was the best-performing N source for both pre-plant and top- or side-dress applications.
  • For pre-plant applications, ESN produced 25 bu/acre more than urea and 11 bu/acre more than UAN which translates to a profit gain of $58/acre more than urea and almost $20/acre more than UAN.
  • For top-dress applications, ESN produced 19 bu/acre more than urea and 8 bu/acre more than the standard dribble-band side-dress UAN which translates to a profit gain of $37/acre more than urea and $7/acre more than UAN.
