NCSU Data Support Use Of ESN Blends For Top-Dressing Wheat

ESN Blend Increases Wheat Yields and Profits
All top-dress applications received 120 lbs total N. ESN blend consists of 84 lbsN/acre as ESN with 36 lbs N/acre as ammonium sulfate. Profit increase is shown for wheat prices of $6.00 to $8.00/bu and is calculated using a $5/acre application cost for the UAN and ESN blend applications. Wheat variety was Pioneer 26R12, and was planted on November 5th.

North Carolina State University Extension research shows that ESN blends applied as a top-dress on wheat clearly provide increased yield and improved ROI for producers. The ESN blend application out-yielded the grower standard UAN treatment and reinforces that ESN blended with a soluble nitrogen (N) source is the superior choice for late-season top-dress applications.

  • The ESN blend application increased wheat yields by 3.5 bu/acre over the UAN application
  • At current prices of $8.00/bu, profit increase from ESN blend is $10/acre more than UAN
  • Using historical wheat prices, the ESN + soluble N blend consistently generated a greater return on investment than UAN for wheat top-dress
