Protect Your Winter Wheat Nitrogen Investment with ESN Smart Nitrogen

When top dressing winter wheat, unprotected nitrogen is susceptible to environmental loss and therefore yield loss. Being left on the soil surface exposed to the environment, unprotected nitrogen can be lost to volatilization. Volatilization can cause up to 40% of your nitrogen investment being lost before the crop can utilize it.

The chart shows 2 Enhanced Efficiency Fertilizer products available today. Both of these products protect against volatilization, leaching, and denitrification. Super U is a chemical added to nitrogen. ESN is a flexible polymer coating around a nitrogen granule. The polymer coating allows moisture to permeate thru it to dissolve the granule and then release a nitrogen solution through it in a useable form for crop uptake. Application timing is critical when top dressing winter wheat and the polymer coating gives the option to apply your nitrogen up to a month earlier than normal top dress application times.

The field in this example was split with the 2 applications and 2013 prices were used to determine the ROI. By using those prices the ESN/AMS/Urea portion improved yield and ROI for the grower by $117.20/acre.

80 units of N applied • Super U/AMS – 50/50 blend • ESN/AMS/Urea – 1/3, 1/3, 1/3 blend
