Maintaining sustainable business practices has always been a priority for growers in the agriculture industry. It ensures that their land can produce quality crops and keep their business profitable for generations to come.
In recent years, this has also become a hot topic for consumers. They want to be assured that food producers are being responsible with their precious resources. Although growers have long used best management practices on their farms, it is sometimes not recognized by consumers. To help educate on what the industry is doing, the agriculture community launched the 4R Nutrient Stewardship Certification Program. The objectives of this program include:
– Maximizing the positive benefits of nutrients in producing more and healthier food to feed growing populations.
– Minimizing negative impacts of nutrients on the environment
– Customizing nutrient applications to local, site-specific conditions.
– Promoting healthier crops and soils
– Complementing other Best Management Practices (BMPs)
“Nutrient stewardship is a science-based approach that offers enhanced environmental protection, increased production, increased farmer profitability, and improved sustainability. The concept is to use the right fertilizer source, at the right rate, at the right time, with the right placement. Proper nutrient management provides economic, social, and environmental benefits to support regionally established goals. On the other hand, poorly managed nutrient applications can decrease a farmer’s profitability and increase nutrient losses, potentially degrading the environment. A farmer’s implementation of the 4R nutrient stewardship principles are the same globally, but how practices are implemented locally will vary depending on field and site specific characteristics such as soil, cropping system management techniques, and climate. Documentation of 4R efforts and assessment of implementation results support continuous improvement toward identified goals.” – The Fertilizer Institute.
The right fertilizer source given to the crop at the right rate, right time and in the right place…
The 4R Nutrient Stewardship Program demonstrates for consumers that growers strive to implement best management practices through sustainable actions that will protect our soil, water and air.
ESN Smart Nitrogen…
ESN is an important tool in managing N within the concept of 4R Nutrient Stewardship. It can help the user meet “right time”, “right source”, “right rate”, and “right place” objectives. ESN is the right choice when it comes to 4R nutrient stewardship, because it helps the grower achieve greater productivity for meeting global food demand, it protects the environment and helps maintain profitability.
Now that’s Smart growing…
