ESN: Assurance in Uncertain Times

If there was one word to describe the 2022 growing season, uncertainty would likely be at the top of the list: uncertainty in commodity prices, uncertainty in fertilizer prices, uncertainty in fuel prices. But when farmers are faced with so many difficult decisions to grow their crops, there’s one decision they can be certain in. Nutrien Representatives Doug Sibbitt and John Niemeyer share why ESN is the smart nitrogen fertilizer choice, especially in uncertain times with urea and fuel prices rapidly rising.

Doug Sibbitt: “Nitrogen management in 2022 is a very big deal to farmers, and because it’s a high price product, the markets have been volatile, especially urea, so farmers are trying to figure out what they need to do.”

John Niemeyer: “A grower needs to look at ESN when prices are high for two reasons. Number one, the polymer coating actually gives an insurance that we’re not losing that nitrogen into the environment.”

Doug Sibbitt: “It’s going to give you 50-80 days protection from loss to the environment through leaching, denitrification, or volatilization, and it’s the longest protection in the market.”

John Niemeyer: “The other thing is, we need to be efficient with it. If we’re going to spend 50-100 percent more money on nitrogen, then we better be efficient with what we’re doing.”

Doug Sibbitt: “It’s spoon feeding that nitrogen to the crop to where it’s going to never starve for nitrogen. It’s always going to be there.”

John Niemeyer: “We can apply it on top without hurting corn or burning the corn.”

Doug Sibbitt: “You can get it next to that seed. It’s going to protect that seed. We have 3X the safety rate of urea.”

John Niemeyer: “A lot of our growers will go from a two-pass application to a one-pass because the longer release time that we have on the field will allow them to use one application of ESN versus two of urea or UAN for example.”

Doug Sibbitt: “I have just had a lot of success with ESN. It’s proven itself and really that’s just what we need.”

John Niemeyer: “Whether it be warm or too much rain, you get a consistent return on your dollar, so you know that when you spend that extra dollar on ESN, what you’re going to get back from it.”
