ESN is Smart Nitrogen for Malting Barley

ESN Smart Nitrogen protects N from loss inside a flexible polymer coating that controls nitrogen (N) release into the soil. ESN feeds crops the N they need in a controlled manner to produce greater yields and better N-use efficiency. Malting barley is sensitive to timing and amount of N supplied. Too little N early in the growing season can reduce yields while too much N after heading can increase protein to unacceptable levels. A multi-year Idaho study demonstrates that proper N rates and ESN blends with urea can increase barley yields while maintaining proper grain protein content.

• A 50:50 ESN:urea blend increased yields by 6 to 7 bu/acre over urea alone.

• A 50:50 ESN:urea blend increased barley profit by $22.00 to $23.50 per acre over urea alone.

• Grain protein was not significantly affected by N treatments and was at acceptable levels for all N treatments.

• A 75:25 ESN:urea blend may not have provided sufficient early season N for top yields as yields were generally lower for this treatment.

Yields and grain protein values are averages of three years. Study was conducted in Eastern Idaho near Rexburg, ID. Nitrogen treatments were broadcast and incorporated before planting. Barley was sprinkler irrigated. Profit calculations assume barley price of $10/cwt and ESN premium of $0.20/lb N over urea. Source: Dr. B. Hopkins, Brigham Young University.
