The Art of Smart

To demonstrate the power of controlled-release nitrogen fertilizer at this year’s Farm Progress show, ESN (Environmentally Smart Nitrogen) decided to go big. With the assistance of world-renowned Earthworks creator, Stan Herd, the team took a 2.5-acre section of an Iowa cornfield and converted it into a piece of living art.

The goal of the piece was to demonstrate the positive impact ESN can have on crop quality and yield, all while providing the added benefit of protection from nitrogen loss through leaching, denitrification, and volatilization. Watch the video below to see how the final piece came together.

Feeding Fields with ESN

The one-of-a-kind art piece featured ESN from start to finish. “Taking a cornfield planted using ESN and carving out our message so it can be seen throughout the season, truly brings home the importance of protecting nitrogen so it is not lost to the environment,” said Suzanne Fletcher, Nutrien Marketing Manager. “This living billboard broadcasts the key message of ‘Feed your Fields with Environmentally Smart Nitrogen.’ Growers can drive or fly by the field and be reminded of the importance of protecting their nitrogen investment and the quality results they can expect when they do.”

With a family background in agriculture, Stan Herd was pleased to work on the project. “Working with a company like Nutrien that understands the needs of balancing feeding the world with a nod to the environment, was very exciting for me,” said Herd.

The piece itself brought a unique perspective to what is possible in a field. Much like the benefits of using ESN. As an environmentally smart nitrogen source, ESN technology delivers nitrogen when the crop needs it and offers significant reductions in the risk of loss to the soil, air, and surrounding watershed. ESN technology is a smarter way to grow.
