ESN Is the Smart Nitrogen for Top Spring Wheat Yields and Profits

Nitrogen rate in trial 1 from the ESN blend was 32 lbs N/acre, and the rate in trial 2 was 38 lbs N/acre. Trial 2 had an additional 20 lbs N/acre applied as anhydrous ammonia. Fertilizer in both trials was side-banded, and the blend consisted of 70% ESN, 30% urea. Profit increase based on $6.00/bushel spring wheat, additional ESN cost of $6.90/acre over GSP, and a protein premium of $0.03/tenth per bushel between 10% and 13% protein, and $0.04/tenth per bushel over 13% protein.

Trials in Saskatchewan show the value and flexibility of ESN Smart Nitrogen in spring wheat production. A 70:30 blend of ESN and urea out-yielded growers standard applications for that area. Figures below show yield gains observed in these studies.

  • A side-banded application of ESN and urea increased spring wheat yields by as much as 7 bu/acre over the grower’s standard practice.
  • At $6.00/bu, profit increase from a blend of ESN and urea ranged from $19 – $37/acre more than the growers standard practice.
  • Average protein increase from the ESN blend ranged from 0.5% to 1.1%, allowing the best return on your investment.
