Fall ESN Use in Minnesota

Spring ESN blend and urea were applied. As with any fall application of nitrogen, soils should be cooling below 50 degrees and incorporated is always best.

ESN has been used successfully in Minnesota for all or part of the growers spring nitrogen needs with a fall application.

Benefits of this application are many including:

  • Save spring workload
  • Nitrogen price is typically lower in the fall
  • Many growers spread P & K in the fall, add ESN for N needs
  • Much safer than ammonia
  • Save “extra” fertilizer application vs ammonia
  • Save time vs ammonia
  • Use ESN for corn on corn to eliminate freezing stalks to AA knife
  • Use ESN for small or irregular fields
