ESN Can Significantly Increase Protein For Hard Red Spring Wheat
Traditional nitrogen (N) management practices may be inadequate to fulfill both yield and protein potential of recently introduced high yielding hard red spring wheat varieties. ESN was part of recent Manitoba on-farm-testing to determine the effects on yield and protein levels. Tests were based on use of grower standard N practice as compared to blends of ESN with urea, either side-band or seed row applied.
On-Farm-Trial
Controlled release N (ESN 44-0-0) was applied as a proportion of the standard source N rate at seeding.
Site M = midrow band 160 lb N/ac as NH3 vs mid-row band 100 N/ac plus 60 lb N/ac as seed placed ESN.
Site N = side band 130 lb N/ac as urea vs. a 50:50 ESN:urea side-band blend for 130 lb N/ac.
Site O = sideband 98 lb N/ac as UAN vs 50:50 ESN:urea seedrow blend for 98 lb N/ac.
Results
Wheat protein response to a portion of N as ESN. (*over columns indicates a significant difference at the 10% probability level). ESN increased protein significantly by 0.2 and 0.4 % points at 2 of the 3 sites.
