ESN Increases Net Returns on Sweet Corn

In grower demonstrations conducted in New York, ESN yielded a significant net return compared to the grower’s standard practice (GSP) of a split application of urea.

  • Gross returns for ESN use totaled $438/ac at wholesale and $658/ac at retail (based on a wholesale value of $4/dozen and a retail value of $6/dozen).
  • ESN yielded a net value of $410/ac at the wholesale level and $630/ac at the retail level (based on ESN fertilizer input costs of $28/ac, for application of 141 lbs n/ac).
  • Pre-plant applied ESN also reduced application costs and saved time compared to the split application of urea.

Average of six grower trials, Long Island, New York. Average N rate was 141 lbs N/ac for ESN and 139 lbs N/ac for grower’s standard practice (GSP). ESN was applied pre-plant; GSP was a split application of urea with 30 to 50% at planting and the remainder in one to two side-dress applications at about V4-V12.
