ESN is the Smart Nitrogen for Alberta Potato Production

Marketable Potato Yield: ESN/Urea Placement (AA&RD, 2007-09)

Research trials were conducted at two sites over three years by Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development researchers. ESN – nitrogen (N) was compared to either urea pre-plant applied (PP) or to the grower standard management practice of split N application (split).

At the irrigated site (Brooks), the use of ESN increased potato yields over both the urea PP and the recommended best practice urea split application. There were no differences noted at the dryland site (Vauxhall), likely because there was little N loss potential in this specific environment.

Research in Alberta (as well as other locations throughout North America) shows that the use of ESN can preclude the requirement/need for traditional split N applications.
