The Smart Nitrogen to Manage Early Season Vegetative Growth Barley

Research trials were conducted in northeast Saskatchewan (Melfort) by Agriculture and Agri-Food scientists to evaluate the use of ESN nitrogen (N) on the production of barley, as compared to urea N. Scientists compared rate, placement and time of application for the two N products.

Excessive early season N availability often leads to increased vegetative growth, increased lodging potential and reduced yield (“haying off”). ESN can be used to manage early season N availability, providing only what the crop requires at the time it is needed and protecting against N loss and reducing early season vegetative growth.
