Managing Nitrogen in the Field – 4R Best Practices
Nitrogen can be a costly and difficult to manage nutrient in your fertilizer …
The planting season was a struggle for many growers across the corn belt. Several thousand acres didn’t even get planted due to all of the rain.
Acres that were planted lost some of the nitrogen that was applied at/or before planting (as seen in the picture to the right). Many of these acres either did not get the post nitrogen applied or it was applied late in the season. Even with the late applications of nitrogen, the potential yield loss was already realized.
Most of the nitrogen lost due to the excessive rains was through leaching into the soil profile in sandy soils or denitrication in water-saturated clay soils.
ESN applied either at/or before planting protects your nitrogen to these potential losses. The flexible polymer coating surrounding the nitrogen allows moisture to pass thru it and then release nitrogen as the soil temperatures increase, feeding the crop nitrogen when it needs it.
